Medicare Parts Explained

Medicare is divided into four parts — each covering different healthcare needs. Parts A and B are known as Original Medicare. We help you understand which apply to you and how to maximize your coverage.

A
Medicare Part A
Hospital Insurance

Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services. Most people don't pay a monthly premium.

  • Inpatient hospital care
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Hospice and end-of-life care
  • Some home health services
Usually Premium-Free
B
Medicare Part B
Medical Insurance

Part B covers outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and medically necessary services. After you meet the annual deductible of $283, Medicare pays 80% of the approved amount for most covered services and you pay the remaining 20% coinsurance — with no annual limit on what that 20% can add up to. The standard 2026 monthly premium is $202.90, though there are a number of ways to have it reduced depending on your income and circumstances. Higher earners may pay more due to IRMAA (Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount).

  • Doctor and specialist visits
  • You pay 20% coinsurance, no cap
  • Outpatient procedures & labs
  • Preventive screenings & vaccines
  • Durable medical equipment
Monthly Premium Required
C
Medicare Part C
Medicare Advantage

Part C bundles Parts A & B — often adding Part D and extras like dental, vision, and hearing — through a private insurer. Often $0 premium plans available.

  • All Part A & B benefits
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Dental, vision & hearing
  • Fitness & wellness perks
Often $0 Premium

ⓘ Important: To enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you must already have both Medicare Part A and Part B effective dates established, and you must continue to pay your Part B premium to maintain eligibility.

D
Medicare Part D
Prescription Drug Coverage

Part D adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare. Stand-alone plans are available to complement Parts A & B. Premiums vary by plan and income.

  • Retail & mail-order prescriptions
  • Generic and brand-name drugs
  • Formulary-based drug lists
  • Low-income subsidy (Extra Help)

Medicare Enrollment Periods

When you can enroll in or change your Medicare coverage depends on which enrollment period applies to you. Missing a window can mean waiting months — or paying a lifelong penalty. Here's a breakdown of each one.

3 Months Before–After
Your 65th Birthday
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your First Chance to Enroll

A 7-month window centered on the month you turn 65 — 3 months before, your birthday month, and 3 months after. This is when most people first sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B.

Who it's for: Anyone approaching 65 and not yet enrolled in Medicare. Missing this window can result in late enrollment penalties for Part B and Part D.
October 15 –
December 7
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
The Yearly Open Enrollment

Every fall, anyone with Medicare can switch Medicare Advantage plans, move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, or change Part D prescription drug plans. Changes take effect January 1.

Who it's for: Current Medicare beneficiaries who want to review or change their coverage for the upcoming year — even if they're happy with their plan, it's worth a yearly check.
January 1 –
March 31
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
A Second Chance for MA Members

If you're already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, this window lets you switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or drop back to Original Medicare (with or without a Part D plan) one time.

Who it's for: People currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan who want to make one change after seeing how their plan works in practice.
Varies by
Life Event
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Triggered by Qualifying Events

Certain life changes — moving to a new address, losing employer coverage, qualifying for Medicaid or Extra Help, or a plan leaving your area — can open a special window to enroll or switch plans outside the usual times.

Who it's for: Anyone who has had a recent qualifying life event. The length of the window depends on the specific situation — usually 60 days from the event.
Not sure which window applies to you?

Enrollment rules can be confusing, and timing mistakes can be costly. James and Krysti will help you figure out exactly when — and how — you can enroll or make changes, at no cost to you.

Medigap Plan Comparison Chart

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are standardized by the federal government — every insurer must offer the same benefits for each plan. The difference is price and carrier. Here's what each plan covers.

Part A Coinsurance & Hospital Costs
Part B Coinsurance or Copayment 50% 75% Copays apply

Note: Plans C and F are no longer available to people who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. Plan G is currently the most comprehensive plan available to new enrollees and is the most popular choice. Plans K and L have lower premiums but higher out-of-pocket costs until you reach the annual limit. Questions We Hear a Lot

Does it cost anything to work with a Medicare broker?
No. Our help is completely free to you. Licensed agents are compensated by the insurance carrier when a client enrolls, and that compensation is regulated by Medicare. It is not added to your premium. Your premium is the same whether you enroll through us, through the carrier directly, or on your own.
When can I enroll in or change my Medicare coverage?
The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7 each year, with changes taking effect January 1. There is also a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31. Outside those windows, certain life events such as moving or losing other coverage can open a Special Enrollment Period.
Do I have to sign up for Medicare when I turn 65?
It depends on your situation. Many people are enrolled automatically if they are already receiving Social Security benefits. Others need to sign up themselves through Social Security. If you are still working and covered by an employer group health plan, you may be able to delay some parts without penalty. Because the rules differ based on employer size, this is worth a short conversation before you decide.
Do you serve Shreveport as well as Bossier City?
Yes. We are based in Bossier City and work with clients throughout Shreveport, Haughton, Benton, Minden, and the surrounding parishes of Northwest Louisiana. We meet in person locally or by phone and video, whichever you prefer.
What should I have ready before we talk?
A list of your prescriptions with dosages, the names of the doctors and hospitals you want to keep, and your Medicare number if you already have one. That is usually enough for a genuinely useful first conversation.
